How it all started

Before we start with what’s going on now, let us take you back to where it all began.

The company started in the early 80’s when the Yamaha outboard agency was awarded to Derricks Marine, (Owner Derrick Anderson) who kept hundreds of holiday boaters, water sport lovers and local fisherman on the water for many years. He then retired and sold the business to Craig Lellyett who left Johannesburg for a more relaxed and safer life at the coast.

Craig and his new team renamed the business to Plett Yamaha and relocated to Piesang Valley road for many years. For the last 6 years he had a very reliable assistant Manager Rory Lombard who is a very active member of the NSRI. Growing up in Knysna Rory has a track record of many years in the marine Industry, initially as a technician and later in sales in Gauteng.

They moved the business in December 2018 to a new location just off the N2 with highway visibility with easy access to all and as a result the business grew to become a serious player in the south Cape boating industry.

In 2020 Craig announced his retirement and Rory with his business partner Mike de Kock grabbed the opportunity and bought the business in September. Mike, who has been a homeowner in Plett for many years, is a boating enthusiast. With Mike’s business background and Rory’s sales ethics they invested in quality boats and motors at the beginning of the season resulting in Plett Yamaha achieving Yamaha’s top selling dealer ranking in the last Quarter of 2020.

For them, this is just the beginning

They saw a big need in the market for the fishing industry for locals graving top class fishing tackle and decided to open a fishing shop named “The Tackle-Box” on their premises. This fully stocked shop with all the top brands is perfectly run by Wade Scott. Wade who is a knowledgeable, passionate, and instinctive fisherman with years of experience.

Plett Yamaha is truly a family business with lots of experience, including Nicky, Rory’s wife, controlling the accounts and son Dwayne leading the sales side of the business. Dwayne comes from a marine technical background and is a rising star in the inflatable boat racing. He has two Trans Agulhas trips under his belt.

With that being said, they put their heads together and realised that there is also an opportunity for a racing department. With an experience formula 1 Racing technician, Attie Tromp with numerous awards and racing experience leading the department. With lots of query’s and racing motors being rebuild this department is well on the right tracks to success.

With lots of plans and ideas, Plett Yamaha is only growing more and more with great leaders and amazing dedicated staff. Our main priority is providing excellent client service and selling exceptional quality boats and motors.
